A polar relationship characterizes my work. One the one hand I am interested in the pursuit of understanding, of pure knowledge, in the sense of phenomenology. On the other hand, tangible, concise specificity is scattered throughout my work. My work is an exploration of the duality of these extremes. In this sense, conditional representation is fundamental to what I make. It is not adequate, however, to say that this dichotomy characterizes my artistic practice. My relationship with the reality of my environment is also based on cultivating perception. In this regard, my work is a commitment to self-expression, solidifying my living understanding of place in space.
My work is often representative, and my paintings are strongly informed by the natural world. I am interested in the academic pursuit of understanding, founded in my past training as a mathematician. This carries over to the painterly artistic practice which I now pursue. I work primarily with paint media as I find the material allows an intuitive balance of observation and rendering. In my experience, introspection and external visual concentration are dual. It follows that my work often represents my current worldview and past experiences. I often strive to render subjects to which I have a deep personal connection. For example, I often converge on work that explores athleticism and its limitations, based on my experience as a collegiate runner. I have a tendency towards realism that contributes to a shared understanding based on intuition.
It is for these reasons that I maintain my painterly preferences. Nevertheless, my process is constantly evolving; in this sense, I have a propensity to experiment as I please. I value agency in intentionality more than any other aspect of painterly practice.
